INSTITUTE FOR DEVELOPMENT ECOLOGY CONSERVATION AND COOPERATION
Ecology and conservation of the Niger Delta biodiversity

Goal:
The Niger Delta region in southern Nigeria is the main oil and natural gas producing area of Africa, with 1/6 of the whole world production being assured by the local production. This region is also home of an extraordinary biodiversity and of the second largest mangrove forests in the world. Nonetheless, because of development project and pollution, this region is especially fragile and requires ad-hoc projects of conservation and management. IDECC’s long-term project aims at classifying the main biodiversity hotspots of the region, determining the main ecosystem drivers and assessing the trophic chain functioning and functionality across the area, with a special emphasis on the respect of the human cultural dimension.
Country:
Nigeria
Years: 2015-to date
Project Director: Godfrey C. Akani
